How can you save on car hire?

The best way to maintain control of your itinerary when you are on holiday is by hiring a car to be your main method of transportation, but that is not the only reason consumers choose to rent a vehicle. Car accident victims, car owners who have a vehicle in the garage and people who do not want to add extra mileage to their cars when they drive long distances also make up the bulk of customers who hire vehicles. Unfortunately, hiring a car is not an inexpensive endeavor – one can easily spend several hundred pounds for just a few days of private transportation. However, savvy shoppers will not settle for paying the first price they see. There are a number of ways that you can save on a car hire, you just have to know where to look.

Choosing Your Vehicle

It goes without saying that choosing an economy car is going to be less expensive than hiring a sports car, 4x4, or van. Even some saloons can cost more because they are considered to be luxury vehicles. When you are on the hunt for car hire, always make sure to specify that you are looking to rent an economy car with no extra upgrades.

Economy cars are going to be smaller, will typically seat only four passengers, and may have limited boot space. This may serve as a problem for some travelers, and while you can not avoid upgrading to a larger vehicle due to the number of people you are traveling with, book space is something you can work with. While comparing prices, see if it would be less expensive to run into a local department store and purchase a car topper where you can store luggage that is not important to have immediately on hand.

Use comparison sites

One of the best and easiest ways to save money on a car hire is by using a car hire comparison web site such as Zopica. Potential customers can enter in everything the need in a car hire, and when they will need it, and the database will pull up a complete set of listings that fit your requirements. This will include the price listings, so that you can compare prices and always get cheap car hire.

Off-Peak Travel

It is not always up to you when you take your holiday, but if you do have a choice, do a little research and find out when your travel destination experiences its off-peak season. This is when fewer people travel to the region, and also when many companies slash prices to entice vacationers to come anyway. Car hires are no different. If you are traveling during the off season, you may find that you can save up to 25 percent on the cost of your rental vehicle.

Use Mailing Lists to Your Advantage

The more time you have to be on the look out for deals, the better. This may not work for last minute travelers, but there is a chance they can get lucky as well. Get on the mailing list for several of your favorite car hire agencies and travel booking organizations. Every so often, they will send you notices of their current deals, which may include price cuts or at the very least free upgrades. Many of these mailings will be of no use to you, but the chance that a deal comes up during the same time you will be traveling is worth sifting through the extra mail once a week.
